Secondary Art with Music (or another subject) Teacher - August 2012
The school in Chengdu is a high school and a boarding school, founded in August 2011, specialising in IGCSE and A Level courses to highly motivated students ages between 14 and 19 years, mostly from China (though it is open to both Chinese and foreign students). It is still a very embryonic school.
The school is the result of a successful partnership with the local authority. Although still very small, the school is developing well.
There are presently students in Years 10, 12 and 13 . A Foundation (Pre-IGCSE) Programme and Pre-A Level programme are offered to better prepare students for the full curriculum in the coming years. Due to Chinese law which prohibits Chinese citizens from attending an international school from the age of 6 to 15, it is not yet known if primary/lower secondary classes will be offered in future.
In common with other internationally recognised educational schools, students study English, Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Chinese, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Economics and Business Studies. Art and Information Communication Technology are also offered.
They are looking for quality Secondary Teachers to join their staff. Most teachers come from the UK but there are some who come from other English-speaking countries. They can consider teachers with other curriculum experience than UK curriculum experience but they prefer those from Australia, New Zealand or South Africa as their curricula have closer ties with the British National Curriculum.
They can consider single teachers, teaching couples and teachers with children as long as the children are in Years 10-13. Teachers must have at least 2 years post qualification experience. This is important as they will be able to access the Foreign Expert's Certificate.
As part of a small and growing team of teachers you may well be responsible for the IGCSE and A Level courses at the school. Following the Edexcel syllabuses you will be responsible for the provision of Schemes of Work, Programmes of Study, assessments, etc in your subject area(s).
The schools in this group are blazing an educational trail for the new China. All staff are therefore pioneers. The schools are not yet mature, and this requires colleagues to roll up their sleeves and help develop the systems and structures required to run the school efficiently. There is additional demand on teachers to cooperate with Chinese colleagues and administrators, so collaboration and cultural sensitivity are prerequisites. It should also be noted that many of the students are EAL students so this requires the relevant awareness and skills from teachers.
At this school, they attract and retain a teaching team which is committed, loyal and collaborative, where professionalism counts. They spend much time and effort helping new teachers settle in and providing a professional induction package. They train them to work within the curriculum framework they provide and to deal with the cultural implications of living and working in China. This is a substantial commitment from the school's side. They full realise that some potential teachers are unsure about committing themselves to an international future and need to put their toe in the water first. However please only apply for a post with this school if you have considered this move thoroughly beforehand.
All secondary teachers are expected to be Tutors, working within the life-skills and tutorial/mentoring programme, and delivering at least one ECA (extra-curricular activity) per week. As with all boarding schools, there are lessons on a Saturday morning which involve some teachers. Exeat weekends take place once a month as from the Friday lunchtime. All students leave the school, allowing the residential staff to have an extended free weekend. You may apply to be one of the resident house staff, joining the boarding community. Residential staff have their own independent accommodation, which is offered, together with all meals during the defined school year, free of charge in exchange for boarding duties. All teachers share in the boarding duties - which means they are far from onerous. You can expect to contribute to one evenin
