Teacher Resources
When you are looking for a teaching job abroad, the most
important item on your list of things to do is research. Sure,
you've probably travelled abroad on holiday, but going on a
package holiday tour to a well-trod tourist destination is far
different to figuring out how to live and work in a foreign
country. The fact is, most teachers don't know what they don't
know about finding a teaching job overseas.
As we mature, part of the learning process is to establish
for ourselves what is right and what is wrong; what is polite
and what is rude; and establishing a general understanding of
how things are done correctly: everything from setting up a
phone connection in a new flat to asking someone out on a date
to defining what exactly is a well-run school. We write a rule
book in our minds and unconsciously refer to it daily when we
make decisions both large and small. It becomes almost part of
our personal makeup.
Part of teaching abroad involves not quite throwing out the
rulebook but certainly realising that it was written based on
your current country and culture and that it just might need a
few appendices. This is both the joy and challenge of teaching
overseas because you will broaden your horizons in so many ways
by learning about another culture and way of life which is
different to, but every bit as valuable and relevant as, your
own. For this reason we have developed an extensive list of
resources for those wishing to teach abroad to begin their
research. We haven't listed all of our resources here, many of
them will be provided to you as you move deeper into your job
search, but please make sure you have done the essential
reading on our teaching abroad resources links before you take
the leap into the exciting and ever-changing world of
international teaching.
