What to expect as a teacher in Jordan

Jordan is a hugely historical destination that entices teachers from around the world. Schools in Jordan are both exclusive and accessible. Jordan is a relaxed and progressive Middle Eastern country that has been at the heart of civilizations for thousands of years. Welcoming of expatriates, Jordanians are proud of their past and present and education is valued. Schools tend to be in more urban locations, but the wonders of the Dead Sea, Petra and amazing Greek and Roman ruins are right on your doorstep.

Schools in Jordan are usually of a very good standard, and serve a mix of locals and expatriates. Because Jordan does not have age-related visa restrictions which are common in most Gulf countries in the Middle East, they are accessible for a wide range of teachers.

Employment packages in Jordan will almost always include flights yearly, and are often taxed at a low rate. Medical coverage is standard and end of contract bonuses are less common here than in the Gulf States. This aside, the savings potential in Jordan is very good as the cost of living is generally low.

About Jordan

Capital: Amman
Language: Arabic
Population: 6.4 million

When people think of Jordan, Petra is normally the only place that comes to mind. However, even though Petra is one of the Middle East's must-see sights, you will quickly learn that there is plenty more to Jordan.

Jordan spans the southern part of the Syrian Desert down to the Gulf of Aqaba. It shares borders with Syria, Iraq, Israel and Palestinian territories and Saudi Arabia. Jordan boasts an incredible diversity of landscapes and ecosystems, being home to valleys, deserts, mountains and wildlife reserves.

There is much to see and do in Jordan, with the castles, Roman cities in ruins, forts and even important biblical sites; such as the river where Jesus was baptised, the mountain top where Moses looked at the Promised Land, and where John the Baptist was beheaded by Herod.

Climate

Jordan enjoys a variable climate of cooler months in the winter, great weather in spring and autumn and hot weather in the summer time. It does rain, and even snow in Jordan.

Activities

Jordan is a great location for people who love the outdoors, with activities such as hiking, camping, rock climbing, snorkeling, castle viewing, floating in the Dead Sea, museums, wildlife reserves and diving to name a few.

Eating and Drinking

Jordanian cuisine is quite similar to other Middle Eastern countries but they also have freshly made dairy products such as cheese and yoghurt to add. Alcohol is normally served in restaurants.

Transport

Taxis or buses are the main form of transport. You can have a car as the road conditions are generally very good, but you will need to keep an eye out for the Jordanian drivers who tend to pay little attention to road signs, lanes or speed limits!

Currency

The local currency in Jordan is the Jordanian dinar or JOD.
