job description

Secondary Maths Teacher (to A-level)
Tokyo, Japan

Start Date: August 2024
Region: Far East and South East Asia
School Curriculum: UK to A-level

The School

This is the second international sister school of one of the UK's most prestigious and well-known schools. It is an international co-educational day and boarding school for 11-18-year olds, located on a spectacular campus in Kashiwa-no-ha, 30 minutes by train from central Tokyo. The School is a boarding and day school in full operation seven days per week including evenings during term time.

The School opened in September 2023, offering its students academic and co-curricular programmes, leading to IGCSE and A-level studies, and access to the world's leading universities. Education focuses upon the importance of developing the whole person and the school is renowned for its highly successful and innovative approach to education.

Location

The school is located on the 4-hectare city campus in Kashiwanoha, Chiba Prefecture (Greater Tokyo). On one of the Chiba University campus sites, the School is fitted with all the state-of-the-art facilities expected from a world class educational facility including professional-standard sports facilities, a black-box theatre, a dance studio with Harlequin flooring, and more.

Thirty minutes by train from Central Tokyo, Kashiwanoha is being designed to become a smart micro city, leading by example and championing sustainability. Japan boasts some of the most unique and beautiful landscapes, vistas, volcanos and coasts in the world. The country is home to the highest quality and most diverse range of offerings imaginable - globally sought-after skiing and snowboarding in Niseko, scuba diving in Okinawa, industry leading technological advancements in transportation, engineering and IT, and a celebrated history that uniquely blends Japanese and Western cultures.

The Mathematics Department

It is anticipated that the Mathematics Department will become one of the largest departments within the school. The classrooms are located within the main site, with cutting edge technology built into the classrooms as standard.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach a range of age and ability groups from Year 7 through to Sixth Form where pupils may take A-level Mathematics or Further Mathematics. Mathematics is a compulsory subject for all pupils up to Year 11.

Staff work closely together with other departments and it is envisaged that the successful candidate will also work within a culture that is inclusive and an atmosphere of mutual support and teamwork will be strongly encouraged.

The very best pupils will take Mathematics to the highest level possible, and many will wish to pursue the subject at outstanding universities. The Department will be expected to enter teams into national and international competitions and Olympiads, reflecting the enjoyment that pupils and staff see in the subject.

It is anticipated that the Department will put on regular additional lectures with visiting speakers and societies, as well as departmental visits outside of the classroom, so that pupils will be stretched and challenged, and foster their love of the subject.
